The process of Contact Lens Fitting

Before you start wearing contact lenses you’ll need to have a general eye consultation. At this appointment your Optometrist will assess your suitability for contact lenses and discuss which type of contact lenses will be best for you.

At your second appointment the Optometrist will fit some contact lenses on your eyes, to check their suitability for your individual eyes and whether you can see with the best clarity of vision. At this appointment we will teach you how to safely insert and remove your contact lenses and how to care for them, normally you take trial lenses home on this day.

Finally you will need to return on regular occasions for the Optometrist to check the health of your eyes. Once the initial fitting is complete you will normally need to have your contact lenses checked once per year.

Contact Lens Tutorials

Nervous? Don’t be. Putting contact lenses in and taking them out is easier than you might think. It may take a few days for your eyes to get used to the feeling of wearing lenses. If you’re having trouble don’t force it, give yourself plenty of time to get comfortable. At Philip Milford Optometrists we are more than happy to help you get comfortable with using your contact lenses. Just ask.

Contact Lens Solutions and Cases

Philip Milford Optometrists carry a variety of types and brands of contact lens solution, each with different ingredients and for specific lens types. It’s important to use the solution recommended for your contact lenses at the time of your fitting and to follow the instructions carefully.

Contact Lens Hygiene and not sleeping in lenses overnight are the most important factors in minimising the risk of infection.

Infections can cause permanent damage to your vision. Always wash your hands with soap and water then dry your hands with a clean towel before touching your contact lenses. Disinfect reusable contact lenses with the correct disinfecting solution (as instructed). Keep your contact lens case clean by emptying the case and wiping it out with a clean tissue every day. Keep water away from your contact lenses and case. Do not wear your contact lenses if your eyes are red, sore or there is any discharge from your eye. Do not wear your contact lenses if you are unwell. If in doubt take them out and contact us for further advice.

We are a Bupa Tier One Preferred provider.

Ortho K (OK or CRT contact lenses)

Live life without day time contact lenses OR glasses! OrthoK (ortho-keratology) is the fitting of specially designed gas permeable contact lenses that you wear overnight. While you are asleep, the lenses gently reshape the front surface of your eye (cornea), when you remove the lenses in the morning, you can see clearly all day without any glasses or day time contact lenses.

Philip Milford is a highly experienced and skilled Ortho K practitioner; he has been fitting and providing ongoing care to a large number of patients for more than 15 years.

Perfect for mild, dry eyes and for controlling the progression of short sightedness. Ideal for water sports or dusty day time environments

Ortho-k lenses are prescribed:

    1. To correct refractive errors (primarily near sightedness, but also astigmatism and hyperopia). In some cases, Ortho-k also is used to correct presbyopia.
    2. To slow the progression of childhood myopia. (Read more about myopia control.)

Ortho-k lenses are also called “corneal reshaping contact lenses” or “overnight contact lenses to correct or control myopia.”

Myopia Control

Modern living is creating an epidemic of myopia (short sightedness). If your distance vision is constantly getting worse, talk to our Optometrist about how to control it. High Myopia can have serious long term consequences on your vision and eye health. Myopia control can be achieved with a combination of special myopia control contact lenses, including Ortho K, and special (low dose Atropine) eye drops. Additionally life style choices such as spending more time outdoors and less time looking up at close objects will have a positive effect.

Due to the long term risks it is best to try and stop Myopia progressing as soon as possible in both children and adults.
